The Zen Collection

While attending the prestigious color specialist course in London, Creative Director Natalie Kasses of Dubai's Pastels Salon visited an exhibition called Tibet’s Secret Temples. Based on an exquisite series of 17th century murals from a private meditation chamber for Tibet’s Dalai Lamas and featuring more than 120 objects including scroll paintings, statues, as well as archival and contemporary film, this exhibition explored Tibetan Buddhist yogic and meditational practice and their connections to physical and mental wellbeing. The exhibition left an indelible mark and was the acute inspiration for the salon’s latest collection – Zen.

The juxtaposition of the volume created on top of her head with on-trend skinny braids pays homage to Yin and Yang – an image synonymous with the Chinese Taoist philosophy of Zen. The addition of silver rings and flashes of red colour bestow a distinctly tribal vibe.

Playing the role of a Zen Princess, the defined lines of a very modern cut offers razor-sharp edges. A twist of modernity is added by the addition of the pink hue to her naturally textured hair.

Having experienced a wave of popularity, the faux-bob underwrites this style along and features an on-trend middle parting, further defined by discrete braids.

Lending deference to the topknot, which was once emblematic of either social status or revered wisdom, the style has been given a truly modern boho update with the presence of loosely, tousled beach waves and subtle highlights.
