Northwest Educator Unveils Retro-Inspired Collection

Jessee Skittrall is a highly revered stylist with more than 25 years of experience as a session artist, educator, and color specialist. Jessee proudly holds certifications from both the American Board of Certified Haircolorists and the International Board of Certified Haircolorists.

Making a difference in people’s lives is Jessee’s true passion. Through his skill in hairdressing and innate sense of human nature, he revels in his ability to inspire others to help them become a better version of themselves. With his natural ability and desire to create dazzling makeovers, Jessee produced a body of work that embraces individualized potential through positive change.

“I wanted to incorporate and bring back the art of classic hairdressing. When starting out, I envisioned more refined looks with highly detailed and polished finishes and a definite ‘pin-up’ sort of quality throughout,” Jessee explained.

He also paid special attention to the influences of the era.  “The main difference between classic or retro-inspired looks of yesteryear and how I perceived the hair within this collection, came down to a more modern application of color and addition of texture.”  Using color in a richer pallet with placement that accents the soft, sultry wave of the style, Jessee carefully refined the details throughout the finished shape creating a more polished, finished look.

To work with the contrast of old-versus-new, Jessee opted to create a more modern approach to the lighting, wardrobe, and overall attitude in the photograph. “Sort of a ‘good girl gone bad’ confliction, or ‘timeless classics crossing a rocker edge’,” he explained.

Pin Curled Bob

Tiffany

A mother of two, Tiffany wanted a more refined look but needed something easy to manage while she juggled her busy life. Tiffany had a severely graduated inverted bob in a washed-out dark blonde shade that simply did not compliment her skin tone or face shape.

To create an all-new look, Jessee started by instilling a sunny strawberry blonde hue all over and then went back through with some fun, asymmetrical copper accents for added depth and richness.  The new color added more drama to Tiffany’s look while setting off her eye color and complimenting her peaches and cream skin tone.

For the cut, Jessee added uniform diagonal layers but left a bit of blended length in front for versatility. To style, Tiffany’s fine, straight hair, Brocato Cloud 9 Mousse and Vibracolor Fire & Ice Fade Prevent Potion were applied and worked into her towel-dried hair. After blow-drying with a round brush for volume, a blend of Cloud 9 Hot Shapes and Volumizing Tonic was applied on wide horizontal sections before curling with a small iron all over in the back and just at the ends in front. The curls were pinned to cool and then Plasticity Foam Polisher was used to polish the look and finalize the “Modern Day Marilyn Monroe” look.

Veronica Lake Waves Long hair Layeres   40's Pin Up

Audrey

Audrey’s blonde strands were in desperate need of attention. Damage from repeated use of at-home haircolor had fried the ends. Jessee cut off much of the damage and then instilled a deep, rich, and warm mocha chocolate color that livened up Audrey’s skin tone and drew attention to her beautiful features.  Audrey’s new brown shade reflects light and looks very healthy, all the while creating a hint of drama.

To create a sultry Veronica Lake inspired look, Jessee started by applying Brocato Cloud 9 Styling Cream blended with Vibracolor Fire & Ice Fade Prevent Potion, working the mixture in all over on damp hair and then blow-dried it for volume with a round boar bristle. Afterwards, Jessee added Cloud 9 Hot Shapes and Volumizing Tonic on large triangle shaped sections of hair. Using a 1-inch iron, he created large curls, alternating directions up and down, and pinning each up to cool. Once cooled and undone, Audrey’s hair was brushed out to form a soft wave and was finished with Carve Texture Icing, Shine Drops Smoothing Serum and Moveable Hold Hairspray.

For a timeless 40’s pin-up look, Jessee took advantage of the already set curls and brushed through the hair, directing large rolls in front and at the sides, pinning each in place as needed. The length was pulled back, directing slightly off to one side and securing with an elastic band. The length beneath the band was wound into a large downward spiraling curl that delicately graced the top of Audrey’s shoulders.

Betty Page PerfectionKerrin

Kerrin’s hair was past her shoulders, falling mostly to one length drastically elongating her face. Her color was an overly dark brown with very little dimension.  She was using at home haircolor to cover her prematurely graying hair and the pigment was grabbing making it look even darker than it needed to be. The specific shade of brown also made her skin tone look very cool and unhealthy.

Deep inside, Jessee saw a redhead just dying to get out, so he applied a cool copper red all over thus lightening up Kerrin’s face and bringing out the warm flecks in her eyes. Next Jessee cut long layers and added very bold, one length bangs cut straight across to instill a modern day Betty Page feel.

To style, Jessee worked in Brocato Cloud 9 Styling Cream mixed with Vibracolor Fire & Ice Fade Prevent Potion onto her damp hair and combed it through for even coverage. After blow-drying with a round boar bristle brush for volume, he applied Cloud 9 Hot Shapes and Mousse Volumizing Foam and curled with a small or ¾ inch iron.  He went in opposing directions on the mid-shaft to the ends through the front and through the entire hair shaft on the back. Once curled, Kerrin’s hair was loosened up by working through with Plasticity Foam Polisher on his fingers. Next, a boar bristle dressing brush was run through the hair along with Carve Texture Icing and then Moveable Hold Hairspray was dusted over the surface to finish.

For a complete mix of texture in a pin-up style, Jessee took the dry curls and created a push set. This is a technique where one section of the curl is held firmly between his fingertips as he pushes back the rest of the curl up along the hair shaft. After push setting the entire head, more Moveable Hold Hairspray was used to secure the shape.

Glamorous Waves Glammed Half Up

Jennifer

Jennifer loves her length but finds her natural blonde shade to be too mousey for her vibrant personality. After cleaning up the ends and adding some long layers, Jessee dove head first into the ultimate ravaging copper red shade. He started by bleaching or lifting two large blocks of hair that were asymmetrically placed on the side of her head in front of the ear with the second behind the ear on the opposing side. Next Jessee used a semi-permanent deposit only color in an intense red that was applied to everything. The finished color is a dramatic cool copper with dimension and personality to match.

Once the color was done, Jessee styled with a mix of Brocato Cloud 9 Mousse and Vibracolor Fire & Ice Fade Prevent Potion applied on damp hair before blow-drying for volume and bend with a round boar bristle brush. Once dry, Carve Texture Icing and Moveable Hold Hairspray were utilized to create the perfect finish.

Pinned Up CurlsErika

Erika’s fine hair was very flat and limp. The length was just past her chin with almost no shape or volume. Her color was overly highlighted, which washed out her skin tone and did nothing to accent her features.

To liven up Erika’s look, Jessee started by infusing three different shades of brown from an intense deep shade through a warm medium tone to a golden light brown. Jessee placed the darkest shade at the base and applied vertical sections through the head for a dimensional series of richness overall. The end result is a deep, warm mocha chocolate brown with textural caramel highlights that reflect light and create drama, warming up Erika’s skin tone and complementing her eye color.

Next Jessee cut uniform layers all over leaving length through the front for styling versatility. On damp hair, he applied Brocato Cloud 9 Mousse and Volumizing Tonic and blow-dried with a round boar bristle brush for volume.  Next, Hot Shapes and more Volumizing Tonic were combined and applied on dry sections. These sections were curled horizontally using a small or ¾ inch curling iron pinning each curl up to set.  Once the hair was cooled, the sections were undone and worked back through with Liquid Latex Liquid Latex Jelly Pomade and Carve Texture Icing mixed together, keeping the curls more intact. Moveable Hold Hairspray was misted over the surface for a medium but pliable hold.
