Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the International Salon and Spa Expo or ISSE took place January 26-28, 2019 at the Long Beach Convention Center. The largest professional beauty event on the West Coast, ISSE is produced by the Professional Beauty Association (PBA), the largest trade organization representing the beauty industry. This year’s show was an epic weekend as PBA merged their three biggest shows: ISSE, NAHA, and Beacon for the first time, and in time for ISSE’s 20-year celebration.

Touting color care with a conscience the ColorProof team set off to their local shoreline equipped with garbage bags and trash ColorProof Clean Uppickers. In just a few hours, they picked up over 150 pounds of trash that could have potentially entered our oceans.

Neuma Beauty has taken their line of professional hair care and styling products in a new, and yes, exciting direction. The change came about when Global Artistic Director Kathy Simon came on board earlier in the year and worked closely with the marketing team to help rebrand the messaging. Until recently, Neuma has been perceived as being very bohemian, which is not unusual for a natural brand. However, Simon and the current creative team saw much more potential with the line and sought to create a more well-rounded branding effort.

Congressman Darin LaHood (R-IL) and Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (D-WA) introduced House Resolution (H.R.) 6736, which would extend the Federal Insurance Contribution Act (FICA) 45(b) tip tax credit to salon and small beauty businesses. This credit is currently available to the restaurant industry and would improve tip reporting, promote tax fairness, and help small businesses by recognizing that tips are a gratuity paid to salon employees by their clients. Employers should not be responsible for paying FICA taxes on tip income not paid by them to their employees.

Set to the theme of Vivids Carnival, guests were treated to an interactive rainbow photo booth, life-sized boxes of vivids, a tarot card reader, temporary tattoo applications, custom drinks, samba dancers, and more. Pravana Product Development Manager Lissette Cruz, accompanied by the Pravana Collective, took the stage to announce the winners to an excited crowd.
