California is poised to become the first state in the union to ban racial discrimination based on natural hair. As reported by the Los Angeles Times, the California State Assembly has voted unanimously to pass SB 188, also known as the CROWN Act, intending to protect people with braids, twists, cornrows, and other traditionally black hairstyles from racist grooming policies.

On Monday, June 24, 2019, Amazon launched its beauty store just for licensed beauty professionals. The e-commerce goliath announced the Amazon Professional Beauty Store to offer hairstylists, colorists, barbers, and estheticians beauty supplies typically sold in salons and spas. The pro-only store requires a cosmetology, barber, or esthetician license to purchase products.

Over 850 dedicated hair professionals recently gathered to witness the announcement of the winners of the Hair Expo Awards ceremony at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Sydney's Darling Harbour. For the 2019 edition, 115 finalists across 19 creative and business categories were selected by a judging panel of 11 international and 10 local judges.

According to a recent press release from the Professional Beauty Association (PBA, a current state Shouse Bill could abolish the regulation of cosmetology and barbering in the state of Texas. Assigned to the House Committee on Licensing and Administrative Procedures, if passed, House Bill 1705 would put consumers at risk of infection or possible injury from unsafe and unsanitary practices. It could also leave professionals at risk of significant financial liability if a customer took legal action following an injury.
