Texture Twist Tutorial

Anna Peters of Sam Villa ArTeam believes that there's a certain beauty, strength, and confidence that surrounds women who embrace their natural hair texture. However, she is quick to point out that learning what works and what doesn't, can make a world of difference in their morning routine.

Texture TwistThe most important thing to keep in mind when working with naturally curly hair? According to Peters, it's moisture! Curly hair tends to be fragile and dry, so it should be handled with TLC. This texture pro suggests going for the optimal curl pattern by following these steps for a flirty textured twist.

  • In the shower, rinse thoroughly, separating hair to allow water to get to the scalp. Use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, with hydrating qualities. Shampoo only as needed, using just a conditioner for a refresh. While the conditioner is on, use a wide-toothed comb to comb out the tangles and then rinse again.

  • Use a T-shirt and scrunch gently to dry the hair. Do not wring out the hair or rub it, as this can damage the curl pattern.

  • Apply products that are appropriate for the hair type. Peters suggests Redken Curvaceous Ringlet Anti-Frizz Perfecting Lotion, which she uses on her curly-haired clients or models. Apply a quarter-size amount into your hands, disperse it evenly, and then rake fingers through. Start in the back and work toward the face, making sure to pay attention to all of the tiny hairs around the face. Scrunch again.

  • Diffuse dry the hair using a Sam Villa Diffuser attached to the Artist Series Professional Blow Dryer. With the ion switch on, use medium to low heat to enhance the curl definition and volume.

  • Once the hair is dry, create a long two-inch wide cornrow type braid down the center back of the head from the front hairline to the nape and secures it with an elastic at the nape.

  • Apply Redken Frizz Dismiss Instant Deflate Serum onto hands and gently gather hair at the center back of the head. Twist hair up towards the top, creating a French Twist in the back with the ends hanging out over the top of the head. The twist should be sitting directly on top of the braid, covering it.

  • Slide pins down through the twist and into the braid to secure.

  • The pins should feel secure once they slide into the braid. Continue pinning along the twist. At the top of the head, continue the twist toward the front hairline, allowing ends to hang over like a faux fringe. Give a light tease (backcomb) to the underside of the hair hanging over front and pin the top into the braid underneath.

  • Shape the fringe with your hands and finish with Redken Wax Blast 10 High Impact Finishing Spray-Wax to add definition and provide hold. By creating a braid foundation underneath, the style can hold up the weight of the hair yet remain secure.
