Pageant-Worthy Curls

Miss USA 2019 Cheslie KrystNatural curls reigned supreme for the 2019 Miss USA and Miss Teen pageants in Reno, Nevada. In fact, the current Miss Teen USA is the first to be crowned while wearing natural curls in 20 years.

Hairstylist and CHI Executive Master Educator Joy Williams styled both Miss USA 2019 Cheslie Kryst and Miss Teen USA 2019 Kaliegh Garris. Below, Joy shares her styling tips for these winning looks– all created with CHI's new Aloe Vera with Agave Nectar haircare line.

Miss USA 2019

"Most curly-girls do not shampoo their hair every day because curls crave moisture," explains Williams. "To define Cheslie's second and third-day curls, I used the CHI Aloe Vera Curl Reactivating Spray. This spray not only reactivates the products I previously applied, but retightens any loose curls and eliminates frizz."

  • Shampoo hair with Aloe Vera Curl Enhancing Shampoo.

  • Towel-dry hair to remove excess moisture and follow up with Aloe Vera Detangling Conditioner.

  • Once the conditioner is saturated, use a wide tooth comb and gently comb through the hair. With a downward motion, start at the ends and work your way up to the roots.

  • Rinse and lightly towel dry the ends. Do not rub too vigorously.

  • Use the LOC method to seal in moisture and hydration while defining those beautiful curls.

The LOC Method
L: leave-in/liquid
O: oil
C: cream

"I like to start the LOC method after the conditioner using the Aloe Vera Humidity Resistant Leave-In Conditioner (The "L" in LOC). Curly hair needs this added conditioning. The agave nectar infuses moisture and improves the elasticity of curls while the aloe vera gives shine and softness. Using either a wide tooth comb, apply from root to ends. By now, her curls are beautifully defined and bouncy as the natural ingredients, and low pH of the CHI Aloe Vera Line have tightened the cuticle and saturated the hair with moisture. From this point, we are simply locking in that moisture for long-lasting results," adds Williams.

  • Use CHI Aloe Vera Oil (The "O" in LOC). Slowly rub in Aloe Vera Oil (The "O" in LOC) along the hair being careful not to disturb the curl pattern.

  • Seal in the curl definition by using Aloe Vera Moisturizing Curl Cream (The "C" in LOC). Pump about a quarter-size amount as needed and rub the cream between on hands. Apply to the hair by scrunching curls in sections.

"One of my favorite tips for added definition is to finger coil individual curls. I make a cocktail of the cream and the oil and twist the hair around my index finger from midshaft to ends. This technique removes any frizz and makes the ends of the curls pop," Williams continues.

  • Set the curl definition by blow-drying using a diffuser attachment. Cup the curls in the attachment and dry slowly using medium to high heat.

Miss Teen USA 2019 Kaliegh Garris

Miss Teen USA

"To define Kaliegh's second and third-day curls, I used CHI's Aloe Vera Curl Reactivating Spray," explains Hairstylist Joy Williams. "This spray not only reactivates the products I previously applied, but it retightens any loose curls and eliminates frizz. Then, we scrunched her hair in sections with the CHI Aloe Moisturizing Curl Cream finishing up with the CHI Aloe Vera Oil for ultimate shine!"

  • Shampoo hair with Aloe Vera Curl Enhancing Shampoo.

  • Towel-dry hair to remove excess moisture.

  • Follow up with Aloe Vera Detangling Conditioner. Once the conditioner is saturated, use a wide tooth comb and gently comb through the hair.

  • Rinse and lightly towel-dry.

"I cocktailed a few of the Aloe Vera with Agave Nectar products keeping in mind the LOC method to lock in moisture and hydration while defining those beautiful ringlet curls. Layering the product in this way ensures perfectly defined curls with long-lasting moisture and softness," said Williams.

  • Distribute Aloe Vera Humidity Resistant Leave-In Conditioner from roots to ends.

  • Mix a couple of pumps each of Aloe Vera Oil and Aloe Vera Moisturizing Curl Cream, rub into palms to mix and apply by scrunching into the hair in sections. Scrunching keeps her curl pattern intact and prevents frizz.

  • FInger-coil individual curls from midshafts to ends by wrapping around your index finger and gently releasing. This technique removes any frizz and makes the ends of the curls pop.
