Even natural hair needs a pick-me-up once in a while. At least that’s what sisters Karla Pelaez-Barrick and Victoria Pelaez of Salon Kavi say. For their client, Charlé, they created a new look using just a bit of refinement for the cut, color, and styling to make her natural coils really pop.
Originally, Charlé had no previous color and had not cut her hair in over 14 years. Her natural curls were very uneven, her color was dull and lifeless and she was in desperate need of a cleanup. First, her hair was highlighted and toned for a bronzy brown hue with shimmery definition. This slightly lighter color adds a rich warmth while hand-painted highlights worked to accent the natural texture.
To style, Deva Curl Supercream was applied to wet hair at the shampoo bowl. The hair was scrunched with a microfiber towel, which was used to remove the moisture while protecting the curls. The soft finish of the towels did not roughen up the cuticle like terrycloth towels could. Charlé was set under a hooded dryer until her hair was completely dry. To finish, the hair was shaken out to reveal freeform curls with a head-turning shape.
