Flawsome

AHFA’s 2018 Newcomer of the Year, Jessica Sutherland of Rokk Ebony created a series of looks for hair that she has dubbed Flawsome. This collection embodies her passion for both women’s short haircuts and traditional barbering and features women whose appearance, personalities, backgrounds, and hair types are vastly different but are all tied together with a disordered structure, and unique beauty.

An adjective created by supermodel Tyra Banks, ‘Flawsome’ is used to describe something that is ‘awesome’ because of its flaws. It’s about embracing individuality and being ok with it. It builds confidence from the inside out and alters our notions of perfection.

Jessica Sutherland of Rokk Ebony“There is a common misconception that women with short hair appear masculine and are less desirable than they would be with long hair - especially to men.  My goal is to break that stigma and create looks that complement the wearer.  Length aside, women need to feel comfortable, desirable, and work with what they’ve got,” said Jessica.

Flawsome draws on structured shapes from iconic looks of the ‘90s that were modernized with different styling techniques. It was also an era that celebrated the rise of ‘girl power’ – a slogan that encourages women’s empowerment and confidence.

According to Jessica, shape and texture are the essential elements of her collection. The inspiration of the ‘90s era is reflected in the shape, with strong technically perfect haircuts. The disheveled and textured styling techniques symbolize ‘Flawsome’ where they take perfection and crush it. Awesome!
