2019’s “IT” Look

Shags & Shag-Like Looks Take Center Stage
2019's "IT" LookThis year’s gotta-have-it hairstyle is taking many forms from a reinvention of classic shags to shorter bobs with shaggy edges and layered lengths with a shag-like appeal. Showcasing two of these looks, Karen Thomson, owner of KAM Hair and Body Spain Lossiemouth, Scotland, took inspiration from the shag to create beautiful, soft hair with an almost undone and natural finish.
According to the 2019 Scottish Hairdresser of the Year, these hairstyles incorporate layers with an almost ‘choppy’ finish that closely resembles the shag. However, the looks are a little softer in their approach; texturizing techniques were added to provide the hair with body and soft movement.
“Shag hairstyles, in general, are extremely versatile and look great on most hair lengths,” said Thompson.

“Both of my short and longer haircuts showcasing the shag-like hairstyles look super-flattering. These hairstyles are perfect for a woman who wants a very quirky, edgy, and statement look and who wants a hairstyle that’s super low maintenance with as little styling as possible to achieve the effortless finish.”
For the styles, texturizing products were used for added texture and to give the hair an effortless appearance. For the longer hairstyle, the hair was first finger-dried, and then a texturizing cream was introduced before finishing with a spray wax for added texture and hold.
2019's "IT" LookFor the shorter hairstyle, hot irons were used to smooth the hair down and give it movement. A blow-dry cream was used prior to blow-drying and styling the hair and wax was used after styling to provide the hair with definition and a messier finish.
