To control the naturally curly hair, Tracy started the style off with a polished blow-dry to give a good foundation. Redken Satin Wear ultimate blow dry lotion was applied through the towel-dried hair and Guts was worked in at the root before blow-drying with a round brush for polish and shine. Once completely dry, small sections of hair are braided tight to the head up and around the ear, following the hairline all the way up to the parietal ridge.

The texture of the Mohawk section was adjusted by spraying salt water mixed with Redken Glass at the root area and part of the way into the strand.  By doing so, Tracy was able to achieve a texture similar to what Melissa would get if she’d been out clubbing all night. The dancing and sweating would activate her natural texture, which would appear at the scalp as a wiggly and fuzzy effect.

Next a mix of techniques was applied to add texture lower on the hair shaft toward the ends.  A crimping iron, curling iron and flat iron were alternately used on random sized sections while some sections were left “as is”. Select ropes of hair were coated with Redken Nylon Clay for added separation.  At the very end Redken Forceful 23 was sprayed erratically on the interior to keep the “wired” look from collapsing throughout the day.
