Basically, the essential fatty acids in oil moisturize hair and replace the lipids to help keep strands from forming split ends. They also seal the cuticle and help prevent roughness, which is especially beneficial if you have naturally coarse or wiry hair. Using oils as a pre-shampoo treatment fills in all the little gaps in the hair and helps moisturize and smooth where you typically get a lot of tangles.
Oils also work as a lubricant for detangling wet hair. In that case, they are lightly applied after shampooing and conditioning but before running a comb or brush through damp hair.
To effectively use oils on your hair, try to distribute everything evenly. Start at the ends, which usually need more oil, and work your way up the hair shaft from there. It’s also recommended to work in sections: the thicker your hair is, the more sections you may need. For normal hair thickness, go for a top section and a bottom section. Put one or two drops of oil in your hands, or more if you have super long hair, rub your hands together, rake your fingers through your hair and then comb through. Repeat for each section but stay several inches away from the roots. The natural oils from your scalp will help to condition hair, so there is no need to add more oil.
Oils can also be used as a styling aid. When a few drops are mixed with styling lotions or creams, they add luster to hair. If mixed in with heavier styling products like paste, putty, mud or wax, the oil helps to soften the product and makes it easier to apply with the added bonus of increased shine. For smooth looks, a few drops emulsified on your palms and smoothed over the surface helps take down flyaways and leaves a polished finish.
