True Identity

This alluring series by Karen Thomson focuses on a person's individual identity and showcases character through the medium of hair. Thomson and the team wanted to create looks that hair clients would love and that would flaunt their array of hairdressing skills, incorporating straight and smooth, textured and voluminous, as well as beautiful hair ups into this collection.

True Identity

Above Left: This look was all about creating height. After backcombing underneath using a brush, Thomson paid particular attention to the top of the head and the root area. The top section of the hair was then brushed over the backcombed section creating a quiff-like style that was smooth in appearance and pinned into place. The look was then finished off with Matrix Style Link Style Fixer Finishing Spray for lasting hold and to add shine.

Above Right: Who doesn't love a textured, braided updo? Prior to styling, the hair was crimped to add texture and to give the hair volume. Then, using large sections starting at the front of the head, Thomson created a Dutch braid, taking it down to the nape of the neck before rolling in and pinning into place. The key to this look is that it looked slightly effortless, so once the braid was complete, Thomson pulled out some sections of the hair to give it a looser and softer finish. When creating the braid she also did not pull too tight and avoided being to ‘neat’ to ensure it looked effortless.

True Identity

Above Left: Natural, volumized, and textured looks are the style of the season and this style definitely is all that. The hair was firstly waved to create movement and was then brushed out and teased at the ends to give a thicker and more blown-out appearance.

Above Right: Less was more with this quirky look as the hair was already cut short. The hair was finger-dried to roughen up the style and give it an instant style update.

True Identity

Above Left: The blunt bob is the cut of 2019 and with this style, it was all about emphasizing the gorgeous cut and ensuring it looked super-sleek. Hot irons were used to smooth down the hair cuticle for a smoother and straighter appearance and were followed by applying some of Matrix’s Biolage SmoothProof Hair Serum to ensure there were no flyaways and for added shine. Thomson also parted the fringe into two, creating a curtain fringe that is so on-trend at the moment and really draws you into the look.

Above Right: With this look, it was all about creating soft, yet textured cascading waves. The hair was prepped with Matrix heat buffer to ensure the hair was protected from the use of heated styling tools and also to add body, volume, and control to the hair. The hair was then curled using the GHD platinum+  to create the perfect u-shaped curls before being brushed out to give the hair a more natural appearance. Thomson then spritzed some Matrix Raw Texturizing Spray into the style, paying particular attention to the roots to texturize the hair and create a voluminous, full-bodied style.
